Understanding ADHD
ADHD (or Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) is a diagnosis given to folks who experience a developmental impairment related to executive functioning. Symptoms can include poor time management, inattention, lack of focus, hyperactivity, emotional sensitivity, poor impulse control, and hyperfocus (intense focus on one area for an extended period, neglecting other areas). ADHD can be treated in a variety of ways, including medication and therapy.
ADHD in Adults
Our understanding of ADHD is evolving. Historically, the diagnostic criteria were based on observations of elementary-aged boys in a Western context, which does not encompass the broader population. Many adults, especially, are starting to become curious if part of what they have experienced their whole life may be explained in part through ADHD. If it seems like ADHD is suddenly everywhere you look, this shift in understanding is likely why.
When Should I Get Help?
If ADHD symptoms are causing difficulties in your life, or if your diagnosis is new and brings up distressing emotions, therapy can be incredibly helpful! You do not have to struggle through this alone.

Reasons to Try Online ADHD Counselling
Online counselling can be particularly beneficial for neurodiverse folks. We tend to be more sensitive to changes in environment or context we cannot control. Being in a familiar environment can reduce anxiety and make it easier to focus. It eliminates the challenges of traveling to appointments, providing a more relaxed and accessible way to receive support.
At the Commons Wellness Collective, we offer specialized support to folks living anywhere in British Columbia.
How We Can Help
Many adults diagnosed with ADHD struggle with self-criticism, often linked to rejection sensitive dysphoria. This is particularly common in adult women, who often fall into the Inattentive Type category, and have masked symptoms for years to feel more accepted. Working through this can be very healing, and bring space for self-compassion, acceptance, and even self-love. This is one of many ways that a therapist can work with you to support your healing and processing in relation to ADHD.
