Hi, I’m Elise

The world is a complicated place, and life can feel confusing. It helps to have someone walk alongside you, either as you make your way through it, or reflect upon how it has shaped you. For me, therapy is a collaborative endeavour, and I aim to empower people as they seek a deeper understanding of themselves and explore the questions they have.

We are shaped by our experiences and backgrounds. When making sense of our current struggles, holding these past experiences with curiosity and compassion can often help to reconcile past with present, and lead to a stronger sense of coherence in life. In my practice, I prioritize a non-judgmental approach and hold the view that feeling stuck, blocked, or unsure is a normal and understandable response to stress, adversity, and life’s challenges. Drawing on a psychiatric nursing background, I also recognize that traditional medical approaches to mental health can pathologize normal human experiences, which may contribute to keeping people caught in unhelpful cycles.

By seeking to understand the roots of suffering, as well as the broader systemic and environmental influences that shape our experiences, therapy can help people reconnect with their authenticity and innate strengths. In addition to understanding ourselves, I also believe that healing and growth often occurs within the context of relationships. As social beings, our sense of wellness can be deeply influenced by the quality of our connections with others, and through first coming into our authentic selves, we are better able to find community who will support us for who we are.

Prior to pursuing my masters degree in counselling, I have experience in a variety of mental health care settings for the past 8 years. Most recently, I have worked as a mental health nurse in both emergency departments and inpatient settings. These experiences have given me a deep compassion for the wide range of struggles people face, as well as an understanding of the barriers that can make those struggles feel overwhelming. I strongly believe in our innate capacity to live fulfilling and meaningful lives, even when that capacity may feel clouded or difficult to access.

I have experience working with a wide range of mental health concerns including mood, anxiety, psychotic disorders, or suicidal ideation. Additionally, I have an interest in working with people who struggle with chronic concerns which might be related to developmental or relational trauma, interpersonal issues, identity, or self-esteem and are seeking a holistic approach to wellbeing.

Outside of work, you will find me in the spaces where I have built community, often outdoors climbing, mountaineering, trail running or travelling. I also enjoy my alone time and am fulfilled by afternoons reading with my two cuddly cats.
