Online Counselling for Depression in BC
It can be hard to admit you’re experiencing depression. A feeling of personal responsibility can persist, perhaps with thoughts like, ‘Why can’t I snap out of this?’. We often feel judged, or judge ourselves.
Depression brings a lack of interest, even in once-enjoyed activities, and a persistent low mood, making it seem impossible for things to improve. While common advice urges healthier eating or exercise, this can increase shame when daily life is already a struggle. Isolation deepens depression, yet we all need to be seen, feel connected, and be treated with dignity—therapy helps here.
If this sounds familiar, please know you’re not alone. Reaching out for therapy takes effort; we see you. Online counselling offers accessible support, meeting you where you are to save energy. Instead of judgment, expect understanding, support, and space to explore healing.
Understanding Depression
Depression is complex. Clinically, it's a low mood or loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities for at least two weeks. We can quickly label understandable reactions like grief, burnout, or unsupported trauma as depression. As a Clinical Counsellor, I find that experiences of depression often have understandable underlying causes.
One analogy I use is this: imagine emotions as colored stripes on a beach ball. If you try to push away painful, uncomfortable emotions, you can't just remove certain colors; the whole ball gets pushed away. This dulls sadness and anger, but also the joy and excitement, flattening the entire emotional experience.
This explains why common "self-care" suggestions rarely work alone; with emotions flattened, we can't fully benefit from things that usually energize us. Daily life feels laborious, and nothing seems to shift our mood, leading to exhaustion, difficulty focusing, and increased isolation, which challenges recovery.
While it can feel overwhelming, change is possible. Recent research shows that after only 16 AEDP therapy sessions, most participants' depression symptoms reduced for at least a year, and they reported increased flourishing, including vitality, gratitude, and calm.
How Counselling Can Help You Overcome Depression
Recovering from depression is challenging because the sadness, anger, or fear we need to process can feel overwhelming, leading to ‘Affect Phobia’—a fear of feelings. Like the beach ball analogy, emotions are pushed away because they're too distressing to experience alone.
AEDP therapy effectively helps overcome depression by teaching us to trust that we can process painful emotions with support, learning to welcome them and reduce symptoms. This is AEDP's mission. If curious, I recommend Hilary Jacobs Hendel’s book, “It’s Not Always Depression.”
Learning to trust our capacity to feel allows us to be more present to all emotions, including joy. While medication can be an incredible tool for symptoms, it doesn’t teach emotional processing, so therapy remains vital.
Online therapy is as effective as in-person, with many feeling just as connected virtually. A unique AEDP element is therapists showing up authentically, fostering a genuine human interaction, not a stilted clinical experience.

What to Expect in a Counselling Session for Depression
Effective therapy requires a safe relationship with genuine collaboration, empowering you to share if things feel too intense or need to change direction. AEDP therapists check in about your experience; discomfort is as valid to explore as positive feelings. Finding a therapist you connect with is vital for a safe space to have new emotional experiences.
AEDP therapists focus on healing from the start, not requiring your whole life story initially. We explore your in-the-moment experience, trusting it will guide us, giving you control over sharing pace as trust builds. This can be a relief, as we understand not wanting to repeatedly explain your story or rehash past work.
If considering online therapy for depression, show up however you are—in bed, comfy clothes, with a pet. Discussing session expectations beforehand can reduce barriers to showing up.
