What Is Religious and Spiritual Trauma?
Religious and spiritual trauma is complex. It often stems from participating in a community that denies the fullness of your humanity. As a result, we learn ways to comply or contort ourselves to maintain connection with the community. Over time, it can become confusing to distinguish between what we truly feel and what we have been taught we should feel.
As someone who grew up in a conservative religious environment, I (Nicole) have experienced this firsthand. I understand how challenging it can be to unravel who you are from what you’ve been taught to be.
What Causes Religious Trauma?
Religious and spiritual trauma often stems from environments marked by control and harsh consequences for perceived unacceptable behavior. These consequences—such as exclusion or loss of relationships—can force individuals to comply to maintain connections and a sense of belonging. This is further complicated when close friends and family members are also part of the community, making it even harder to break free or set boundaries.
